Hypoglycemia and Mood Swings

Hypoglycemia and mood swings ....Protein intolerance is a type of food sensitivity. People who have protein intolerance have difficulty breaking down the proteins in their food. This might be one factor in mood swings because the brain is deprived the amino acids it needs to manufacture key neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine.

With poor protein digestion there is a decline of glucose. This condition is called hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. The adrenal glands respond to this low blood sugar by releasing cortisol and adrenaline. These two hormones stimulate the liver to release stored glucose. Adequate glucose is provided to the brain but the increased levels of adrenaline and cortisol lead to emotional arousal. This cycle feeds mood swings and other emotional symptoms.

Since mood swings is a symptom of hypoglycemia one might think that a high intake of sugar would stabilize the mood. Individuals with low blood sugar will instinctively eat something sweet if they feel light-headed or dizzy, which is a sign of decreasing blood sugar. This provides a quick fix because the refined sugar enters the blood stream quickly. But too much sugar will trigger a spike in blood sugar and then a sudden plunge. That’s why people who get lots of sugar in their diet feel like they’re on an emotional roller coaster. They will experience highs consisting of anxiety and irritability to lows of depression and sadness.
